Sheep husbandry was introduced in Uttarakhand in Tehri in 1939. Since then sheep and goat husbandry has become endemic to Uttarakhand and has emerged as a sustainable source of livelihood for the poor and marginal farmers of the state. Thus to promote and encourage scientific outlook towards sheep and goat husbandry in the newly formed state in 2000, Uttarakhand Sheep and Wool Development Board (USWDB) was envisioned and came into existence as a registered body under the Society Registration Act, (1860).
Sheep and goat husbandry plays a crucial role in rural economy of people living in high altitude of Himalayan ranges of Uttarakhand. It is the chief vocation of the farmers and the main income source, as the adverse climatic condition doesn’t allow cultivation of cash crops. Moreover, the sheep wool and goat hair assists in keeping the locals warm during harsh winters. To cater specifically for small animal farmers the Uttarakhand sheep and wool development board was established.
The objective of the board shall be to encourage, promote and carry out viable, all activities to improve the breeding and management of livestock (Sheep, Goat Rabbit) to enhance their production and productivity throughout the territory of the State of Uttarakhand.
Establish linkage with national and international research setup, and orchestrate a research support program for livestock leading to improved efficiency and cost reduction.
Carry out studies and surveys on all aspects of livestock production, productivity and livestock products; generate information and data leading to a dynamic database and management information system by advance information technology for the growing globalization of Indian livestock industry.
Livestock Farming is Germaine to Uttarakhand and forms an integral part of the rural economy contributing in some form or the other to household income and family nutrition, besides producing the much-needed biomass and draught power for agricultural operations. This activity is carried out by Uttarakhand Sheep and Wool Development Board (USWDB) in millions of households across the state and provides employment to the marginal and landless farmers.
